Diabetes

The most common form of diabetes is Diabetes Type II which is reversible in most cases especially if caught early.  We start seeing signs of Insulin Resistance long before we start to see blood sugars and Hemoglobin A1C start to elevate.  We are able to assess for the early signs of insulin resistance with fasting insulin and glucose tests. We can then adjust the diet and provide nutritional support and exercise instruction so your body is properly using insulin and glucose preventing diabetes and the long term side effects.

According to several studies "Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor for cognitive dysfunction and dementia in the elderly. T2DM has been thought to be associated with vascular diseases, eventually leading to vascular dementia, but recent studies have established that T2DM is also associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD)."  Also complicating the picture is the fact that many of the diabetic medications and diet foods increase our risk for multiple deficiencies, especially B vitamins that also put us at risk for Dementia and Alzheimer's disease along with fatigue, muscle pain, vertigo, loss of balance and many more health conditions.

For information on vitamin deficiencies associated with medications you can check out www.consumerlab.com.

Already have diabetes?  We are still able to provide nutritional advice and support at the cellular level.  Often diabetic patients are told that it's okay to eat large quantities of whole grains, low fat dairy and fruits because they are natural.  This is just not true and if patients have particular food sensitivities the immune response they experience especially with grains and often dairy will increase the damage to the pancreas and cells.

Although Diabetes Type I is a more complicated autoimmune disease several of the same principals still apply and nutritional changes and and proper analysis may help you are a family member prevent or get control of diabetes.
