American Heart Month

You may have heard that Heart Disease is the leading cause of death.  According to the CDC website you should schedule a visit with your doctor to talk about heart health, add exercise to your daily routine and increase healthy eating.  Good recommendations indeed, but not very specific.  Many of you have probably talked to your doctor and had lab tests or blood pressure tests and then reduced your fat and/or sodium but have not seen a change in your blood pressure or that dreaded Cholesterol.  What if………. Low fat is not the answer, but the problem?  What if……. sugar raises your blood pressure more than salt?  What if……. Cholesterol is not the best marker for heart health?  What if………we could help you determine the most appropriate treatment for you that includes looking at your genetics and lifestyle factors?

Did you know that vitamin D, B12 and Folic Acid levels can have a significant influence on your risk factors for cardiovascular disease?  Did you know that low cholesterol can actually be more detrimental to heart disease and increase your risk for dementia than moderately elevated cholesterol?  You may have heard that fish oil is good for your heart, but how do you know if you are getting enough and if it is really helping?  You have a parent that has heart disease, is it genetic?

We are happy to introduce Cardio IQ, a way to look at your Cardiovascular risk factors at a much more advanced level.  With Cardio IQ we not only look at your Cholesterol, Triglycerides, LDL, and HDL.  We look at several other lab markers that help us determine the most appropriate nutritional treatment that truly reduce your risk factors for Cardiovascular disease.   We can look at genetic markers to determine your genetic risk factors.  But, wait, “I don’t want to know if it’s genetic because I don’t want to worry about it.”  The genetic analysis we do helps us determine what your best prevention is.  Genetics does NOT predetermine you will get a disease, it just tells us you if you need to work harder in this area to achieve optimal health.
